The Cleveland Cavaliers/LeBrons are one of the most interesting teams of the 2014 season. Everyone on the planet is well aware that LeBron is back in Cleveland (Thanks Nike!) for better or for worse. Between LeBron and Manziel, I think even Cleveland is tired of hearing about itself…

The big three of LeBron, Love and Irving are easily the most talented trio in the NBA. Analysts never questioned their talent but their ability to gel as superstars and as a team. As loaded as the roster was on opening day, there were clearly major holes in the team, solid rim protection and serviceable defense anywhere. To address these needs Cleveland has already made a major trade before the mid-point of the season.

With so many moving parts, it is understandable that the Cavaliers have had an up and down season. It seems in only 45 games that the Cavaliers have experienced it all. They started as title favorites then with injuries proceeded to lose so many games the media speculated coach Blatt lost the locker-room. Currently, there is discussion that the Cavs are back! (Or more specifically LeBron is back after a 2 week injury recovery). So let’s take a look to see what the data shows us about the Cavs this season.

The graph below shows the peaks and valleys of the season. Currently the Cavaliers are riding a 7 game win streak. Can you guess when LeBron came back? (He said sarcastically)

If we dig a little deeper, we see that the Cavaliers are experiencing more success at Home than on the Road. More than just the win totals, we can see this in the average point differential. The tables below explore these differences for the Cavaliers.

Finally, this graphic shows every game of the season for the cavaliers. This is an expansion of the tables above. Every dot represents a game the Cavaliers played this season. The x-axis is the number of points the Cavaliers scored, while the y-axis is the number of points their opponents scored. In the comment section below, please give feedback on any interesting trends you see here.

It’s still too early to tell what the Cavaliers will be this season. Especially since they are only a few games in after a block buster trade. And if the rumors are true, they are still looking to add more depth to the current roster. It will be fun to see how the season shakes out for the Cavs. LeBron isn’t getting any younger…
